The Coptic New Year is a continuation of the oldest calendar in the world i.e. the Ancient Egyptian Calendar. The Australian Coptic Movement Association (ACM) would like to wish all Copts and Egyptians a happy new year.
The Coptic New Year is a continuation of the Ancient Egyptian Calendar and is celebrated on the first day of the Egyptian month of Tout, and depending on the year, it falls on 11 September 2021. The Calendars origin dates back over 6000 years.
Also known as the feast of Nayrouz, the Coptic New Year was an agricultural festival for ancient Egyptians due to the flooding of the Nile River which fertilised the land and allowed for growing crops. Therefore, The Coptic New Year is both an Egyptian celebration and an Orthodox Christian one.
Egypt’s Coptic Christians decided to reset the calendar in the year 284 AD to mark the enthronement of the Roman Emperor Diocletian since thousands of Christians were martyred for their faith in Christ during this era. The Coptic Calendar has both a spiritual and cultural flavour and has been celebrated in various ways throughout the centuries.
Copts remember their martyrs and celebrate by eating red or white dates and Guava. The red symbolises the martyr’s blood and the white date symbolises pure hearts. The solid seeds represent their strong faith.
This year we continue to remember the ongoing suffering of our modern day martyrs in Egypt.
In particular we remember Ramy Kamel.
Ramy was arrested in November 2019 for speaking out on the plight of Egypt’s Coptic Christians. Ramy is a peaceful individual who spoke factually and
calmly regarding the plight of Egypt’s Copts.

We have written to the Foreign Minister and will contact other Federal MP’s in coming days. It would be great if you could also consider writing to your
local Federal MP where ever you may be in Australia or New Zealand requesting that the Department of Foreign Affairs urges the Egyptian Government to take
another look at this case and to free Ramy.
